Tribute has been paid to local businesswoman, Wendy Ward, who died on April 22 after a courageous battle against cancer.

Wife of the late Ray Ward, Wendy was born in January 1945 and grew up in Walpole St Peter. She used to attend Sunday School at Walpole and went to West Walton Secondary School.

Wendy got married and became the mother of Pam, Andrew, Mark and Rosemarie. While in her 20s she suffered from life-threatening ulcerated colitis and had to undergo surgery. It was also around this time her first marriage broke up and Wendy later married local businessman Ray Ward, who owned a wallpaper and paint shop on Norwich Road. This business developed into an ironmongers and later into a locksmiths and moved firstly to Hill Street, before moving to the current location of Anglia Locksmiths in Church Terrace, Wisbech.

Wendy was always busy in the business, whether it was doing the paperwork or serving customers. Ray died in 1995 after suffering with Alzheimer’s and Wendy continued to run the business until recently, partnering with her son, Mark.

Wendy was always looking for ways to help others and through the years she supported many local charities including Octavia Hill, Alzheimer’s and others through Wisbech Lions where Ray was a member. The last 15 years of Wendy’s life have been shared with her partner, Stan Dunn. Wendy was also proud ‘Nanny’ of nine grandchildren who will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by both family and friends.
