Eighty-five people with various disabilities enjoyed hours of fun in - and out of - the sun when they came together at the Hudson Leisure Centre in Wisbech for Fenland Disability Sports Forum’s (FENDIS) annual summer sports day.

They grabbed the chance to have a go at a choice of eight different sports: archery, bowls, cricket, football, goalball, hockey, table tennis and seated volleyball.

The day was organised by FENDIS and Fenland District Council’s sports development team to give people a chance to take part in a range of sports they may not have been able to try out before.

Eight other partners were also involved: Living Sport, Parkfield Archers, Cambridgeshire FA, Cambridgeshire Cricket Board, Cambridge Dons Goalball, Wisbech Bowls Club, Wisbech School (for Volunteers) and Wisbech Grammar School (for Facilities).

Thirty volunteers also came along to lend a hand and Iceni, the natural mineral water company, donated 200 bottles of water.

FENDIS runs a multi-sports session at the Hudson every Thursday (5-6pm). For more information, call Alison Allebone on 01354 680825 or 0798 654 9976.

Vanessa White, chairman of FENDIS, said: “The day was a huge success, which could easily be seen from amazing amount of excitement and enthusiasm from all the participants, especially when a big roar went up from a goal being scored or a point won.

“I joined in several activities throughout the day, and it was fantastic to see how much fun everyone had trying something new. Each sport was adapted where necessary to suit the individual, so everyone was included. There was lots of healthy competition but everyone showed great sportsmanship towards each other.

“As well as giving those who came along a taste of new sports, we hope the day will give support for grants to enable Fenland Young People’s Multi Sports to extend their clubs in Wisbech and March to include a 19-plus group.

“Anyone 19-plus who is interested should contact Alison Allebone on 01354 680825, 0798 654 9976 or email alisonallebone@btinternet.com.”
