Glebelands School pupil Lexie Perry will be flicking the switch today (Saturday) to light up Chatteris for the festive season.
The schoolgirl was chosen by the Chatteris school for the honour and will be joined by Santa in making the town’s dazzling lights display go on at around 4.30pm.
Local funeral directors J H Landin and Son will be offering bereaved people a chance to pay tribute to their loved ones by hanging a star on the town’s Christmas tree.
Stars for a Star cost £3 people can place their personalised messages written on a star and all takings will go to charity. Proceeds will be divided between the Mayor’s charity fund and the Christmas Lights Group.
Chris Savill, chairman of the Christmas Lights Group, said they have one or two new displays this year and challenged people attending the switch-on to see if they could spot which they are.
One of them has been sponsored by the Rotary club at a cost of £750.
The roads will be closed from about noon until around 10pm (depending when the crowds have dispersed) and Mr Savill said there was a need for more volunteers to help man the barriers in shifts to ensure people don’t try to get through in vehicles.
There will also be collecting buckets for donation towards the cost of the lights.
