The flag on the Wisbech Town Council chamber is flying at half mast for former Mayor Edwin Mortimore who died last week.
Edwin was town Mayor from 1989-90 and thoroughly enjoyed the experience according to his wife Iris.
“He had a fantastic time as Mayor,” she said. “We met so many lovely people.”
Edwin was born in Middlesex and joined the Fleet Air Arm after leaving school. At the age of 21, he joined the police and served for 28 years, later working as coroner’s officer in Staines.
He then retrained as a chiropodist, teaching many people over the years, until illness forced him to retire. The couple moved to Fenland where Edwin served a term as Mayor.
Edwin and Iris have one son, Richard, two granddaughters and four great-grandchildren. He was “very family orientated” and was very proud of his family.
He enjoyed green bowling and played for Bucks County. Edwin also liked shooting and fishing in his spare time.
Edwin and his wife were married for 68 years. He had become very ill and was living in Rose Lodge after being care for by Iris for several years.
He died in Rose Lodge last Tuesday at the age of 87 and his funeral will be held this Friday at Fenland Crematorium. The service is at 10.30am followed by a gathering at the Oliver Cromwell Hotel in March.
