THE first snow of the New Year fell like a blanket over Fenland at the weekend.

While many people stayed in doors in the warm, others took advantage of the deep snow drifts to make igloos, snowmen, have snow fights and general fun in the snow.

The weather resulted in the cancellation of many of the local sporting fixtures and only one football match was played which was a Gorefield.

At Welney the frozen water gave ice skaters the rare opportunity to make the most of the conditions with ice skates and sledges.

Monday saw most of the main roads clear but heavy snow still remained on many of the ungritted village roads.

Only one school was closed in Fenland on Monday, which was March’s Neale-Wade Community College. Some parents have hit out at the closure, see page 3 for the full story.
