This year, in response to a public poll, Wisbech Town Council invested in a new and exciting lighting scheme for the town.
The 2014 lighting scheme is the first phase of improvements intended to light up Wisbech during the festive season; the second phase will happen during 2015. Fundraising, to enable the lighting to be improved year-on-year began at this year’s switch-on event on November 30.
The town council’s electrical contractors worked hard, particularly given the short timescale, to install the new lighting purchased by the council. Staff pulled out all the stops to ensure that the lighting was in place ready for the switch-on.
It is important to recognise the time and effort which goes in to delivering an event of this scale, most of which is down to local volunteers. Support was provided by some businesses (most notably Tin Fish Creative Communications Ltd) and charitable organisations (Wisbech Lions).
Linked to the switch-on was a grand prize draw and the following prizes were won: first prize: Apple i-Pad mini(donated by Tin Fish Creative Communication) won by W Eady; second prize: Butlins day pass (donated by Holiday with Us) won by A Parry; third prize: dinner for four (donated by Worzals) won by S Simpson; fourth prize: Pantomime tickets for four (Donated by the Angles Theatre) plus travel by taxi (donated by David Patrick) won by P Beresford; fifth prize: Cinema tickets for four (donated by The Luxe) won by G Rider; sixth prize: Disney Olaf Snowman cuddly toy (donated by Tin Fish Creative Communications Ltd) won by C Wright.
This year’s switch-on event, which attracted around 3,000 people to Wisbech town centre was a real success, with a fantastic atmosphere and people getting into the festive spirit.
The festive activities in Wisbech are set to continue, with the Wisbech Yule Fayre taking place in the town centre on Monday 15 December. The event - consisting of a Christmas market, festive entertainment, Father Christmas, reindeer, food and drink – will operate between 9am and 4pm, with a formal opening by the Mayor of Wisbech.
