A conker championship is set to be a smash hit when it is held next month.
Contestants will be battling it out in the 15th Wisbech and Fenland Conker Championships on Friday, October 9.
Wisbech Lions Club is once again organising the smashing contest.
Entries this year are limited but already teams from Peterborough, Downham Market, March, Great Yarmouth and Wisbech have entered.
Organiser Lion Kevin Rodgers said: “Playing conkers is great fun, it is pure aggression and there is no defence from getting your conker smashed or you smashing your opponent’s nut to pieces.
“Strict rules apply with a referee for each match, and on a knock-out basis, the finalists for both men and women are soon found.
“Trophies for best man and best women are presented but the real competition is for best teams.
“Here is where all gentleness and finesse are lost. Each team wants to be crowned champions.
“Old wives tales tell of conkers keeping spiders out of your house. One in your pocket might ward off rheumatism and even cure piles. It does not say how the conkers should be administered in this latter case but be assured any Wisbech player beaten by an ‘outsider’ will have the satisfaction of knowing that his victorious opponent goes home confident of never suffering from haemorrhoids.”
All profits are given to a local charity or good cause. Entries are £7 per person, including a hot supper.
