A Wisbech pet shop is looking to reunite a Mediterranean tortoise with its owner.
The adult male spur thighed tortoise was brought into Fenland Exotics in Norfolk Street yesterday (Tuesday) after it was found wandering around in Wisbech Park by Tomas Stonkus.
Fenland Exotics owner Andi Shortland explained it could have been in the park for weeks as the weather has been perfect for the reptile and there would have been lots for it to eat.
“It’s obviously been well looked after,” Andi said. “It’s in very good condition.”
Andi is keeping the tortoise at his house at the moment as there is not room at the shop for it. But he said he can only look after it temporarily as he already has lots of male tortoises.
He will hold onto the tortoise for six to eight weeks but if the owner has not been found by then, he will look for another home for it as the weather will be starting to turn and the animal will need to go into hibernation.
As tortoises are valuable, Andi will not give the reptile to anyone who rings up. The owner will need to correctly identify some distinguishing features and bring any paperwork, if applicable.
