HEALTH leaders in Cambridgeshire are advising residents of the range of services available to help them over the weekend while GP surgeries are closed.
Dr Christine Macleod, Medical Director for NHS Cambridgeshire and NHS Peterborough, said: “If you feel unwell or get an injury over the weekend, there are a range of services to help you. If you have a cold, stomach trouble or even a bad hangover that won’t go away you can always ask a local pharmacist for advice and over the counter remedies for quick relief. A number of pharmacies will be open over the weekend and on Bank Holiday Monday, check the list on the NHS Cambridgeshire website here: http://www.cambridgeshire.nhs.uk/opening-times.htm. NHS Direct and NHS Choices are also on hand with information and advice 24/7, just call 0845 46 47.
“If your illness is not getting better, you can call your GP surgery to access the GP out of hours service for advice on your condition. You can also visit the Cambridgeshire Minor Injuries Units for minor injuries such as cuts and grazes, minor burns and scalds, bites and stings, strains and sprains and minor eye or ear problems. Your nearest minor injury units are at the North Cambs Hospital, Wisbech, call 01945-488068 and Doddington Community Hospital, Benwick Road, Doddington call 01354-644243.
“If you have sprained your shoulder, ankle or wrist/hand, had a fall or maybe strained something with a bit of Bank Holiday DIY the minor injury units can help you. They can also treat chest infections and tonsillitis, as well as a range of minor illness and injuries.
“Remember 999 and the emergency department are for life threatening conditions only, such as heart attacks, strokes, loss of consciousness and severe trauma or injury. Bank Holiday weekends can see increased pressure on emergency services and it is important that people choose well to access the right service for their health needs and help use NHS resources wisely.”
If you are worried about which services you can access over the weekend call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 or visit www.nhs.uk. A list of pharmacies open over the coming Bank Holidays can be found on the NHS Cambridgeshire website here:
