Hearing help clinic closing

A long running clinic aimed at helping the hard of hearing in March is set to close later this month because it is no longer needed.

Fenland CAMTAD (Campaign for Tackling Acquire Deafness) opened its doors in 1984 and has been providing a free and convenient local hearing aid maintenance service for the last 28 years.

The clinic held at Jubilee Court was originally set up because of difficulties for people to attend the audiology department at the Edith Cavell Hospital in Peterborough and also the growing demand for services due to the advent of digital hearing aids.

The new audiology service for those aged over 50 with age-related hearing problems in Cambridgeshire was replaced by a new partnership two years ago, called Cambridgeshire Adult Hearing Service, led by Specsavers, with Addenbrookes and Hinchingbrooke Hospitals.

Audiology services are now much more available to the hard of hearing in Fenland with clinics and assessments at Doddington Hospital and Specsaver shops in March and Wisbech. Appointments for all assessments and repairs, retubing are available quite quickly and must be made by telephoning the central office 0800-0232984. Battery replacement is also available at Specsavers in March and Wisbech, although it is now possible to arrange for delivery by post.

These changes mean the need for the CAMTAD Clinic at Jubilee Court is no longer there and so the last clinic will be held on March 26. The Hearing Help clinics in Chatteris (weekly) and Whittlesey (twice monthly) will still be operating as usual, as will the equipment for the home demonstration clinic on the first Thursday morning monthly at Doddington Hospital. No appointments are necessary.
