HEART Research UK has some tips on how to make your loved one feel special on Valentine’s Day while at the same time taking care of their heart.

Flowers, chocolates, intimate dinner for two or a weekend getaway – how will you make your loved one feel special on Valentine’s Day?

Romantic gestures can cost a small fortune turning what should be a loving and caring thought into a major stressful event with a huge credit card bill to pay at the end of the month.

But it needn’t be that way, with a little imagination and savvy planning; you can make Valentine’s Day at home a day to remember for the price of a loving heart.

Get fruity with exotic far eastern delights such as dates, figs, lychees and kumquats to give a twist to your usual fruit salad.

Go nuts with pre-dinner nibbles of almonds, pistachios and roasted pumpkin seeds, full of vitamins, minerals, heart-healthy fats and fibre.

Spice up your starter with baked capsicums stuffed with a cooked herby rice filling or add a dash of tabasco sauce to plain boiled wholegrain rice.

Hook a fresh salmon or tuna steak for a heart-friendly main course that’s rich in omega-3 fats. Pan fry in a little olive oil and dress with lemon juice and fresh dill or tarragon.

Add some sparkle to your evening by having fizzy water with slices of lemon and orange at hand; alternate with a glass of elegant red wine or add it to white wine or rosé to make a spritzer.

Finish with a zing - turn frozen berries into a tangy velvety sauce to drizzle over yoghurt, crème fraîche or lemon sorbet.

You don’t need to be a master chef but devoting effort and lavishing your time will be sure to keep your loved one’s heart in shape and beating just for you.
