Steve Barclay MP is congratulating junior footballers in Mepal and Whittlesey after they scored extra funding to enable new teams to be set up and meet the costs of brand new goal posts.
The Football Foundation which provides support and training to Junior Football teams across the country wrote to Mr Barclay to inform him of their decision to grant £5,000 to Mepal Sports Junior Football Club to support new teams and a further award of £378 to Whittlesey Junior Football Club for the purchase of new goal posts.
Mr Barclay said: “This summer funding boost is excellent news for young footballer players in Cambridgeshire.
“At a time when health experts are raising warnings about falling levels of participation in sport amongst young people it’s great to see our local teams being recognized for the important work they do in offering sports activities like football to as many young people as possible.
“The support offered by organisations like the Football Foundation is invaluable to local teams who are keen to expand their facilities and training sessions.
“Getting young people out on the pitch is not only a great opportunity for them to exercise and develop healthy lifestyle habits but also a chance for them to build self confidence and valuable social skills.
“Local football clubs are often at the heart of our communities and I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate Mepal and Whittlesey Junior football clubs and wish them both success in the upcoming season.”
