Help make a wish come true

Planning for fundraising events in aid of the recently-launched Local Wish charity are well under-way with a huge range of activities aimed at encouraging people of all ages to take part.

The charity, which is the brainchild of Wisbech business women Christina Purcell of Holiday With Us and Nickie Bantoft of Bantoft Chartered Accountants, aims to give deserving families or individuals a treat they may not otherwise be able to afford or organise.

Nominations have come in from a number of people keen to see friends and family members enjoy something special. Nominations include young children who have overcome adversity, a local councillor and grieving parents.

Nickie and Christina are due to go through the nominations and meet with those short listed to decide how many they can help make their dreams come true later this week.

“We will meet those short listed to discuss what they would like and then we will see what we can do. We have to be realistic because we have to raise the money needed to pay for the wishes to be granted,” explained Christina, who said they have already agreed to help five youngsters through the Queen Elizabeth Hospital at King’s Lynn who suffer from cystic fibrosis.

The fundraising is due to start in earnest on March 23 with a fitness day at Wisbech St Mary, with three sessions running throughout the day at a cost of £5 per ticket to participants. For more information and tickets for this event contact Christina on 01945-461614 or email:

Jacqui Owens from the Hare & Hounds, on North Brink, Wisbech has also decided to join forces with Holiday With Us and Bantoft & Co to help support some of the fundraising events.

Other events already organised are: May 5 - 10k Grand East Anglia Run - King’s Lynn - participants need to raise a minimum of £30 to take part. May 9 - a charity dress auction - Hare & Hounds Hotel, Wisbech - sell or buy a dress - £5 to sell a dress, June 1 - rugby fun day - Rugby Club Wisbech - Watch the Games or join in the family fun - more details to follow - Entry free, July 6 - Las Vegas Night - Hare & Hounds Wisbech - Dress code Vegas Style, July 26 - Summer Ball - £500 Per Table of 10 for sale and July 28 - Picnic in the Park - Live bands and entertainment.

Christina said: “We want as many people as possible to get involved and help support this good cause. The more money we can raise throughout the year the better. We hope to hand out the wishes in December and we are determined that they will be something really special for these special people to enjoy.”

Anyone interested in getting involved should contact Christina on the number above. People are welcome to organise their own fundraising events in support of A Local Wish and again should contact Christina.
