It’s time to get you Active

Active Fenland has landed near you! What’s that, I hear you ask? It’s a new project, funded by Sport England, which I’m helping Fenland District Council to deliver in collaboration with Living Sport the County Sports Partnership.

Our aim – the clue’s in the name – is to get people off their sofa and taking a bit of healthy exercise.

Did you know that Fenland is one of the worst places in England for being active? Only 21.9% of us 16years + are active for 30 minutes or more a week. We want to change that.

In the first year the project will be working on a range of sports, including athletics, badminton, cricket, gymnastics, swimming and table tennis. So there will be all sorts of activities popping up near you!

We have also broken the project into three categories: Get Active for people aged 14-25; Be Active for adults with their children; Stay Active for over-55s.

Over the coming weeks I will be updating you about the project and informing you of all that lovely health and fitness related stuff I know you’re all dying to hear about.

In this first column I want to focus on the summer holidays as most of us are already a week or two into them.

Has our glorious English weather put a dampener on you picnic plans? Get yourself down to your local New Vision Centre pool; they have some great activities for the whole family this summer.

Bring the kids to try water zorbing, the sea scooters and the inflatables. There are also adults-only sessions for that well deserved me time.

All these sessions are advertised at your local centre and on the website www.newvisionfitness.co.uk

If you’re less of a water baby and more of a land lover, run routes may be for you. Keep an eye out for them – they’ll be popping up in your local parks throughout August. You can follow our signed routes to complete 1, 2 and 3 kilometres. If you fancy trying one out but don’t want to go it alone, run groups will be starting to cater for your needs. So if you’re an off-duty dad, a busy mum who wants to run or an energetic over-55, there’ll be one for you.

To help us find the groups that best suit you, questionnaires will be available to fill out at local New Vision Fitness Centres.

Remember to check the column fortnightly to find out all the information you need to look great and feel even better. Watch out for the Active Fenland logo and Get, Be, Stay Active!
