Former Wisbech man Jeff Hickson is hot stuff when it comes to cooking as he won a chilli challenge when he took part in the BBC’s One Show aired on Friday.
Jeff was in the final to find the UK’s Best Chilli judged by food critic Jay Rayner. A support services manager at Woodland Hospital in Kettering, Jeff (45) sent off his recipe and was called by the Show’s production team and chosen as a finalist.
Travelling to the Llanerch Vineyard in South Wales in February, Jeff was matched against two other contestants. As the winner, Jeff appeared live on the famous sofa with hosts Alex Jones and Michael Ball who was standing in for Chris Evans. The celebrity guest, Sir Ben Kingsley had the opportunity to taste Jeff’s Chilli and he chatted to Jeff afterwards.
Jeff had invited an old friend to join him for the afternoon and they travelled to the London Studio. Welcomed to the BBC, Jeff did a quick rehearsal then it was time to go live. Jeff said he wasn’t nervous and the One Show Team had been really professional.
Overall Jeff had about 10 minutes on the show which he said seemed to pass quickly.
“I was chuffed that my dish, which I had to recreate the evening before and take with me, had gone down so well. It was an amazing experience and to be on the same seat as some of the most famous people in the world of showbiz and entertainment was quite humbling,” said Jeff.
