Pride in Fenland awards night Special Award to Michael Shelly. ANL-140314-122612001

Some of the area’s true unsung heroes gained the recognition they deserved on Thursday when the annual Pride in Fenland Awards were presented at the Boathouse Businesses Centre in Wisbech.

Everyone of those nominated for one of the prestigious awards was worthy of winning for their selfless acts that make such a difference to those they help and the community at large.

The awards are run by Fenland District Council in conjunction with the Fenland Citizen with the winners being chosen after readers nominated their community heroes and told us why these people make an important difference and deserve recognition.

Council leader Alan Melton compered the evening and heaped praise on all those nominated in each of the three categories: Good Neighbour, Group/Community Organisation and Young Citizen.

He highlighted how important each and every one of those nominees was to the people they help and the community they serve and spoke of his pleasure at being part of such a special evening.

He particularly highlighted the Young Citizen nominees who he said made the
future of Fenland look a lot brighter.

Mr Melton praised all those who give up their spare time to do something good for the community.

He said: “Doing something selfless for other people is something that we continue to be in awe of and that is why we must celebrate this work and say a big “thank you” to all of those here this evening.

“Without your dedication and commit-ment to helping improve the lives of others localism in Fenland would not be as vibrant and thriving as it is today.”

Michael Shelly, of Parson Drove, was this year’s worthy recipient of the Judges Special Award, who was praised for his enthusiasm, dedication and commitment in all that he does for his community in Parson Drove including organising the Over 60s and other lunch clubs.
