A March leisure centre will be getting a £850,000 make-over after a decision by Fenland District Council earlier today (Thursday, August 13).

Cabinet members have agreed a scheme will include improvements to th gym and pool.

Councillor Michelle Tanfield, cabinet member responsible for leisure, said: “The George Campbell is a much-loved community leisure centre but it has needed a revamp of this kind for some time. The improvements we are now able to make will transform it and bring it up to the modern standards that the people of March demand and deserve.

The project will include:

· Increasing the size of the gym to house about 50 pieces of equipment, with a higher roof and a large glass frontage, giving lovely views over West End Park.

· Adding a new exercise class room, providing a more practical space than is currently available, with a high ceiling and a lot of natural light.

· Replacing the current swimming changing rooms with a new, “village-style” changing room, with individual cubicles, that will enable families to change together. It, too, will be airy and bright, with plenty of natural light and high ceilings.

In addition cabinet have asked that the swimming pool has a new liner and that its roof is replaced.

The main improvements will cost about £765,700, with an additional £71,300 needed to replace the pool roof and £16,500 for a new pool liner.

The council has secured a grant for £216,690 of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Improvement Fund to help more young people get into sport.

Cllr Tanfield said: “A lot of thought and planning has gone into these changes and the extra money from Sport England and the Lottery Fund, together with advice from the Amateur Swimming Association, has helped us make a bigger investment than we initially thought possible.

“We are now going to crack on with putting all these improvements in place as soon as possible.”
