Application to turn sex shop into coffee shop

A coffee shop has put in an application to transform the former Guyhirn sex shop back into an eating establishment.

Coffee Tree, working through Ken Elener Architectural Design in March, is requesting a change of use from adult shop to a coffee shop and meeting room.

It is proposed to create toilet facilities and a meeting room on the first floor, with the ground floor serving as a coffee shop. It will serve sandwiches, rolls, cakes, paninis, etc, for eating in or takeaway.

No changes to the building externally have been requested.

If approved, the coffee shop would provide one full time job and five part-time roles. It has not been stated what hours the shop would be open.

The building was originally a Little Chef restaurant until it closed in 2004. There was great controversy when an application was submitted in 2008 to turn it into a sex shop, dividing local councillors and residents.

But the application was passed and the site remained as an adult shop for four years until it closed last year. Since then, the two storey building on the A47, situated next to a petrol garage near a roundabout, has stood empty.
