After eight years and around 400 greyhounds rehomed, Barbara Townsend is closing her kennels in Marshland St James.

Barbara has been running the Wisbech branch of the Retired Greyhound Trust for many years but is being forced to call it a day due to ill health.

She said: “I have put it off and put it off. But I’m finding it so hard to keep going. I can’t brush the kennels out, I can’t walk the dogs any more, and I have my own dogs to look after. I don’t want to get to the point where I can’t do anything for them.”

But Barbara will continue to fundraise for the RGT and hold the popular annual dog show, booked for July 21 at Upwell Playing Field.

Barbara still has 14 dogs waiting to be rehomed - almost all of them “black beauties” – but she will not be taking in any new dogs as she gets spaces.

“We rehome on average 50 dogs a year and there are people ringing up every week asking if we have space,” she said. “Small trainers are being squeezed out because there’s no money in it any more and kennels are closing. All the holding kennels are full.

“I would like to thank everyone who has supported us over the last few years and thanks also to the Citizen, who have always been willing to help us.”

Barbara also made special mention of volunteer Susan Leach, who travels from Tydd St Mary to volunteer three times a week.
