Farmers from across March and Chatteris had an early start on Thursday when they gathered for the annual general meeting of the NFU branch.
Skylark Garden Centre at Wimblington hosted the event providing breakfast for 45 members of the March and Chatteris branch together with their guest speaker Peter Kendal, President of the National Farmer’s Union for England and Wales.
Mr Kendal, who gave one of his first speeches to the branch when he became president eight years ago, was making his final visit to a branch in this region before standing down.
Peter Eddy, group secretary, explained: “He honoured a commitment to come and speak to us on the day he was elected, so it seems very appropriate that this will be his last visit to a branch in this area as the national president.”
Mr Kendal, who farms in Bedfordshire, spoke on current issues affecting farming including agricultural policy reform and the buy British campaign.
Current branch chairman Trevor Edgley and vice-chairma Christopher Gowler remain in post for a second year.
