Cambridge self help for adults who stammer
After a successful event in 2007, the 2nd Cambridge Stammering Open Day is taking place at Ridgfield Primary School on Saturday, March 16 including teachers, academics, employers and speech and language therapists).
The aim of the event is to offer support, advice and inspiration to people who stammer, provide a social and working environment for interaction and networking between all delegates and ultimately to raise awareness of the issues surrounding stammering to a wider audience in Cambridge and beyond.
The event is co-sponsored by the Dominic Barker Trust, set up by Dominic’s parents in memory of their son who tragically took his own life due to the pressures of living with a stammer.
The event will run from 9.30am – 5.15pm at Ridgfield Primary School, Radegund Road, Cambridge CB1 3RJ. It will open with a welcoming speech by Cambridge MP Julian Huppert. Two key note lectures by Dr Jan McAllister of University of East Anglia and the other by researchers from University Campus Suffolk, all respective academics in the field of stammering research, will look into stammering and psychosocial issues and early outcomes of young children who stammer. The workshop programme will include sessions on approaches to therapy, inspirational stories from stammerers who have succeeded in the face of adversity, careers advise and setting up self help groups.
At the information stand there will be opportunities for informal 1:1 discussion with speech and language therapists from Cambridgeshire NHS PCT, meet representatives of the British Stammering Association and sign up for a major research project into social anxiety and stammerers. Participants will be able to drop in or attend the whole programme. The Open Day will be closed by an excellent stand up comedian who stammers called Jaik Campbell.
