College of West Anglia media make-up student Amanda Hughes claims the silver medal in the WorldSkills UK competition finals held in Birmingham.

Over 500 people took part in 61 WorldSkills UK National Competitions in skills ranging from engineering through to media make-up. The competitors secured a place in the WorldSkills UK competitions after competing in regional heats throughout the UK earlier this year in which Amanda gained 1st place. The competitors battled it out to win Gold, Silver and Bronze and ultimately be named the ‘best of the best’ in the UK at their chosen skill.

The competition theme was ‘Hollywood’ the golden age and the students had to apply bald caps, prosthetics, make-up and body paint to the entire model in just 4 hours. Any costumes or prosthetics used had to be hand-made by the student before the competition.

Amanda scooped silver with her amazing interpretation of Hollywood. “I have been completely taken over by body painting and have finally found my true passion. I dream of it and wake up excited to paint! I have the skills and imagination to take my designs to the next level. I had a truly fantastic time at the WorldSkills and the response from the crowds was overwhelming. To win Silver at the event is amazing and it has given me such a confidence boost and I’m looking forward to my future career”, said Amanda.

Tracey Gains, course tutor and mentor commented, “It has given me great pleasure to support, mentor and coach Amanda through the regional heats and the national final.”

Principal David Pomfret said: “This is an outstanding accolade and we would like to congratulate Amanda in gaining this tremendous achievement and are very proud of her. We focus very hard on helping our students ‘to go further’ and I think this really demonstrates that anything is possible. I am excited to track her progress and to see how she can harness this award going forward.”
