Community creates new pocket park
Chatteris Women’s Institute members, their husbands, a local farmer and the Town Council have all worked together to provide a new amenity in the town for future generations.
A new pocket park has been created, in memory of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The wooded area should provide a lovely shaded site where people can stop and rest while out for a walk once the young trees have matured.
Morning WI member Cynthia Spooner applied to the Woodland Trust for the trees back in the spring. Unfortunately her original application was not successful but Cynthia persevered and was awarded 105 trees and shrubs in the autumn distribution.
An area of Town Council owned land was identified as an ideal site for the wood but the area was very overgrown. Chatteris farmer George Munns very kindly prepared the site ready for planting and has agreed to maintain the site for the foreseeable future.
Horticulturist David White created a plan showing where the trees should be planted and Evening WI member Pat Ashmore’s husband Donald then set out the site for the planting gang who suitably dressed and armed with spades spent a Friday morning planting the trees.
Those wielding the spades were Linda Ashmore, Susan Kightley, her husband Roger and granddaughter Hannah, Jean Streater and Chatteris Town Council Clerk Joanna Melton. Mr Ashmore then spent several hours hopefully ensuring the trees have the best possible start by protecting them with canes and rabbit guards.
Once the trees have matured the plan is to provide some seating to further enhance the new amenity.
