Councillors are today being recommended to approve plans for a major refurbishment of a Fenland sport and fitness centre.
Proposals to extend and develop the One Vision George Campbell Leisure Centre in March come before Fenland District Council’s planning committee this afternoon.
Planners have urged committee members to rubber stamp the plans.
The authority wants to erect a single-storey extension to the west of the entrance area to form a multi-purpose activity room, measuring eight metres by 30 metres, to host dance and fitness classes and other functions.
It also wants to build a second extension immediately north of the swimming pool, entirely contained within a courtyard area. It would measure 11.5 metres by 17 metres and be directly linked to the main pool area.
Work would also be carried out to renovate the changing rooms, which are of a “very poor design”, so they meet expected standards.
The application says the proposal would enhance access to leisure and recreation facilities and help to promote healthier lifestyles.
It also says boosting facilities will reinforce the future of the business in a competitive fitness market, and provide economic opportunities for local contractors and suppliers.
