GALLERY: 99p Store now open in Wisbech

THE weather put some people off but there was still a good turnout for the opening of Wisbech's new 99p Store on Thursday.

Customers braved the rain to be the first ones through the door of the town's newest shop, in the building that formerly housed Woolworths on Market Place.

Prior to the opening, Graham Hillier (52) got to do a 99-second trolley dash around the store as the winner of a competition where entrants had to say why they love a bargain in nine words.

Graham, who is a residential worker at a Wisbech children's home, targeted the garden section and picked up some Hallowe'en items as well. In total he managed to get 66 items in his trolley, way off the record of 115 items but still above average, and despite having cracked a rib only five days before.

He said: "I was planning to go to the chocolate aisle for my wife but didn't make it."

Graham added he was pleased his colleagues had not turned out to see him open the store as they had threatened to do, because it would have been embarrassing.

Andrew Durrant from Leverington was the runner-up and got to pick 20 items to take away free of charge. Andrew and his wife Barbara picked up some toys for their sons Benjamin (8) and Nicholas (6).

The first customer through the tills was two-year-old Shania Ketteringham with her mum Pam and Pam's friend Makenzie Miller.

Pam said she was impressed with the range available in the store and Makenzie was also lucky enough to pick up an iPod Shuffle in a quiz.

99p Stores Ltd Chief Executive Nadir Lalani said he thinks the store will do well in Wisbech as it offers something different and he thinks it will benefit other shops in the town centre by bringing business to the area.
