Help for families affected by substance misuse
A dedicated service which provides help and support to people affected by someone else’s substance misuse has been set up in Cambridgeshire.
The Inclusion Family Service is part of the substance misuse service provided locally. It offers five mutual aid groups across the county which meet on a monthly basis and the team also provide one-to-one support.
The groups, which are open access and welcome all family, partners and friends of a substance misuser, offer a chance to share experience and advice in a non judgemental and friendly environment.
At the one-to-one sessions, family members have a safe place to discuss the issues going on at home and can start to make decisions on how to make changes.
Tracy Thompson from the Inclusion Family Service said “Families are often fundamental to helping a substance misuser make a permanent change but they can be left feeling isolated and alone, struggling with a problem they feel they have little knowledge about, and no control over.
“The Inclusion Family Service can help. We offer a safe place for families to express their feelings and reflect on what is going on. We can also provide information and advice, and signpost them to specialist services if needed.” The Family service also give talks to local community groups and services about substance awareness.
