Christmas Day brought more than the usual surprises of presents under the tree for Fenland smallholders Graham Byatt and his partner Russell Holloway in the shape of a baby donkey.

Graham who has run the smallholding at Marshland St James with Russell for the past seven years explained: “We knew his mum Maggie was expecting a foal when we got her, but because she was already pregnant, we didn’t know when it might be due.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes when I looked out of the window on Christmas morning and saw Maggie was lying down. To be honest I wondered what was wrong, because donkeys don’t lie down very often, but when I got to her I could see the foal was about to be born. It was wonderful to see him come into the world and of course there weren’t too many names we could think of that were more perfect than Joseph.”

He added: “Obviously a donkey plays an important part in the Christmas story, so we were delighted that we had our own special Christmas donkey.”

Baby Joseph has settled in well in his own stable with mum Maggie and his grandmother Nutmeg and is thriving under their tender care.
