March voting
Voters living in March North Ward are set to go to the polls tomorrow to choose a new representative on the town council.
The by-election has been called following the resignation of former councillor Tamsin Nicholls.
Three candidates are vying for the seat: Stephen Court (Liberal Democrat), Malcolm George Conservative), and Robert Williams(Labour).
However, concern has been raised by some residents over the lack of polling cards being issued and the fact there is a change of venue for voting. In the past there have been three polling stations: St John’s Church Hall in Station Road, and two at Westwood School in Maple Grove.
However, voters categorised as BB2s will have to go to the Cantonese Kitchen in Norwood Road to cast their vote this time. The change came about in 2011 when it was agreed Westwood School was not a central location for some of the electorate in North Ward.
And the Cantonese Kitchen was used as a polling station for the first time in last autumn’s Police Commissioner vote.
Clive Lemmon, Town Clerk, said polling cards are not a legal requirement in by-elections and the decision not to issue them for this poll was made to save costs.
He pointed out the locations of all polling stations were advertised on Fenland Council’s website and also on statutory notices posted at various locations including the One Stop Shop in Broad Street.
