MP maintains pressure on the MOD

On Tuesday the Defence Secretary announced the future army basing plan and During the debate questions were raised on the future basing decisions for the RAF.

Concern had been raised earlier about the location for the new Joint Strike Fighter aircraft with speculation the JSF will be based at RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland.

South West Norfolk MP Elizabeth Truss has been urging the Ministry of Defence that a decision be announced to locate the JSF at RAF Marham in Norfolk.

And on Monday she wrote to the Secretary of State pressing him on this point. Elizabeth has also requested an early meeting with the Minister responsible for the JSF, Andrew Robatham, so that a delegation of Norfolk MPs can emphasise the value of the JSF to RAF Marham and the wider community.

Elizabeth said: “It is disappointing that there is no further update on the RAF basing. I am maintaining the pressure on the Ministry of Defence to ensure the JSF is located at RAF Marham. The Secretary of the State can be in no doubt of the support that Marham enjoys locally in Norfolk.

“In fact his announcement about the long term future of Swanton Morley barracks will be warmly welcomed across the county. However the economic value and strategic importance of RAF Marham to the region is substantial and local businesses, councils, residents, service personnel all want to know what the future will hold.”
