MUM’S POETICAL TRIBUTE FOR SON

GRIEVING mum Sue Welbourne is hoping a book of poetry published in memory of her lost son will raise money for two local charities.
Sue, who has been writing poetry for many years, has published an anthology of her work based on memories of her son Steve Mason, who was killed in a motorbike accident close to her Newton home in 2008.
The book, which is illustrated with family pictures, also includes poems about her other children: Paul, Helen and Sarah and their childhoods.
“It sounds as if it could be depressing, but it is not all doom and gloom. There are poems dealing with the loss of Steve and the feelings and emotions that came from that. But it is also a celebration of his life and there are some humorous poems about some of the things he got up to. It is a tribute to Steve and my family,” explained Sue, who is hoping people will pay a minimum donation of £3.50 for the book.
All money raised will be divided between Meadowgate School and Victoria Lodge, as Steve used to work with the disabled.
The family have held fundraising events each year since Steve, who was mad on motorbikes, was killed for both charities.
Among these functions is an annual hoe down, which is always a sell out and is held around the time Steve was killed in May. This year’s is already sold out.
The poetry book has been published free thanks to Sue’s talented writing after she won the chance to get her works put in print.
In order to win Sue had to enter competitions to gain tokens, she needed to win at least 10 tokens to get a book printed for free - but in fact won 14.
“I realise that a book of poetry is not something everyone would want to buy, but I’m hoping that people will buy it because it is for charity,” said Sue.
