‘Name and shame church vandals’

WIMBLINGTON residents are being asked to name and shame vandals who have caused damage in a church memorial garden.
Users of the community-created garden behind the Methodist Church on Norfolk Street were distressed to see that someone had broken a stone seat and bent a metal archway out of shape.
Church secretary Trevor Hill was called by a parishioner who discovered the damage.
He said: “This space is a memorial garden to a lot of our congregation. This is not on and we would like to catch them.”
This is the third time the garden has been targeted by vandals. In the latest incident, the legs of a stone bench were broken and a rose archway was bent beyond repair.
The bench was particularly distressing for the woman who found it as there are rose bushes either side, planted in memory of her husband, and she used to sit there to remember him.
Mr Hill said: “I don’t know how they’ve done it. It looks like they’ve used a fence post to smash the legs off. They’ve been swinging off the archway.”
The garden has become a meeting place for the village youngsters, who have taken to sitting there and socialising. Mr Hill said he has asked the teenagers to move on before, concerned it might lead to trouble.
“I have had a word with a couple of the lads as I was worried they might make a mess,” Mr Hill said. “I am happy for them to use it, as long as they behave themselves.”
The incidents of damage have been reported to the police and anyone who sees suspicious activity in the memorial garden is asked to call them on 101.
