National shoeing award for Outwell farriers

Outwell farrier David Sanderson had success nailed when he won a top award for the best shod horse at the recent National Shire Horse Show in Peterborough.

The judge, renowned farrier Gary Darlow, picked just four Shires from the 300 in the show as his finalists not knowing that two were shod by David and they both belonged to Gorefield breeder Graham Ward.

It was Mr Ward’s mare Decoy Princess Dawn who took the winning trophy while her three-year-old daughter, Decoy Royal Sunrise was also a finalist.

The winning trophy was presented to Mr Ward with David and his apprentice Steven Rooney receiving a plaque.

The shoes had been made by David and Steven and fitted prior to the show. They were hand-made steel showing shoes with bevels, which involve more work.

David said the judge was looking for a good shoe in keeping with the horse workload. A farrier for 20 years, David said the show is one of the biggest in the country and he was pleased to win such a prestigious award.

In the showing classes, Decoy Dawn was placed 4th in the best mare four-years and upwards, and Royal Sunrise was 6th in the best three-year-old filly class.
