Wisbech Post Office is in its new home after the Crown branch closed its doors on Wednesday.

The Post Office can now be found in established town centre store Etcetera. The new look Post Office branch opened to the public on Thursday.

New Postmaster Ray Wickes, who owns Etcetera, is delighted with the way business has gone since it opened and said it has “brought life back into the place”.

“By having the Post Office here,” he said, “we are trying to not only help our business but help the high street by keeping footfall in the town centre and also by keeping it in more or less the same location.

“We are hoping we can offer a better service to the public as well, with longer opening hours.”

The new Post Office offers the same services as the former Crown branch, including travel money. An ATM will be installed shortly.

And while the Post Office has been given a clean, modern look, there are still some touches of the old. Frequent visitors to the former Post Office will notice the familiar clock in situ.

The war memorial that was in the Crown Post Office will now be moved to the Wisbech Royal Mail site.

Anu Parasuraman, from the Programme Correspondence Team, said in a statement to Wisbech Town Council: “We value the concerns and suggestions from Wisbech Town Council over this matter and recognise the concern that the memorial is moved to a suitable location. Please be reassured that we too fully recognise the importance and significance of war memorials and when the need arises to move a memorial, this is taken very seriously and handled as sensitively as possible in recognition of those who sacrificed their lives.

“The war memorial in Wisbech Crown Post Office commemorates those employees of the General Post Office (which encompassed both Royal Mail and Post Office Ltd) who gave their lives in World War One. While we now operate as separate companies, Post Office Ltd and Royal Mail have a long and proud shared history, which is why it is wholly appropriate for the War Memorial to go to the Royal Mail site in Wisbech so that they can continue our long tradition of commemorating former colleagues who fell.”

The new Post Office will be open Monday to Saturday, from 9am to 5.30pm.
