Fenland District Council is once again embarking on a scheme to help catch cheats who are fraudulently claiming the Single Person Discount on their Council Tax.
It is writing to everyone currently claiming the 25 per cent discount, telling them to complete a form confirming their personal details and circumstances.
Failure to respond will lead to the discount being ended.
Councillor Michael Humphrey, FDC’s Cabinet member for finance, said: “We are carrying out this review because we need to ensure that everyone claiming this discount is entitled to it. People who abuse the system are putting an extra burden on genuine Council Tax payers.
“When we set the charge, we have to take into account the amount of money we lose through discounts or exemptions. So to keep the charge as low as possible for everyone, we have to do all we can to stamp out all kinds of cheating and fraud.”
