Young people are being given the chance to kick-start their fitness and discover a martial art thanks to a Lottery-funded sport project in Wisbech.

Up to 60 young people aged 16 to 25 are being invited to sign up for a new six-week training programme with the Samurai Karate School, thanks to funding from Sport England’s Sportivate.

The initiative is part of a national £56 million Lottery-funded scheme aiming to give more people the chance to discover a sport they love, and get fit and healthy at the same time.

It particularly supports those who are not usually sporty, and allows sports clubs and organisations to offer free or heavily subsidised sessions.

Steve King, who has run the Samurai Karate School in Wisbech and King’s Lynn for 15 years, is thrilled to be able to offer his first two Sportivate programmes after applying for funding last year.

Each of the two six-week programmes offer sessions once a week and will be held at New Vision Fitness’ Wisbech centre, the Hudson Leisure Centre.

The first session will start on Thursday, May 15, between 7pm and 8pm, and run at the same time every week thereafter.

The second programme starts on Saturday, May 17, from 10am to 11am, and again, runs at the same time each week.

Each programme can take between 20 and 30 participants and the deadline to apply is Monday, May 12.

Participants will be taught the art of karate and take part in a number fitness-based exercises such as circuits.

Steve, a fourth dan black belt master, said: “It’s aimed at 16 to 25-year-olds as people in this age group often leave school and drop out of doing any physical activity.

“The World Health Organisation’s definition of health is not merely the absence of disease or illness, but complete well-being of the mind, body and soul and what we do fits in with that message. It’s not just about diets or exercise on their own, it’s a whole lifestyle.”

To take part, participants have to pay a one-off £6 registration fee but all of the sessions are free.

As spaces are limited, people are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

Anyone interested in signing up can contact Steve on 07843 414433 or email: coach@leaner4life.co.uk
