Support for fight to save post offices
FENLAND Council has pledged its support for the four Fenland post offices earmarked for closure.
The council, as a key member of the Post Office Change Group, is working with the group to take up public concerns.
The consultation deadline set by the Post Office Ltd ended yesterday (Tuesday).
Local councillor Fred Yeulett, who chairs the Change Group, attended a meeting at Christchurch to collect all the public questions and concerns.
These will form part of the Change Group’s response to Post Office Ltd plans to close post offices at Christchurch, Benwick, St Peters Road in March and Harecroft Road in Wisbech.
The council and the Change Group have also devised a short-term strategy to help local businesses overcome any difficulties the closures will impose.
The strategy is available to view on www.fenland.gov.uk The council has also set aside around 1,000 to provide professional advice for Post Offices which may be affected by the closures.
Mr Yeulett said: “While we understand that the Post Office must operate in a commercial way, we must also ensure that it sticks to its remit as a community service and adheres to its access criteria.
“The council and the Change Group have been active in collating the concerns of local people and we will be putting them as strongly as possible to the Post Office. It is not acceptable to close post offices, for instance, where there is a large elderly and isolated community.”
