A massive three-legged race is being planned by a March pub to help raise funds for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital to say thank-you for saving the life of a local toddler.
Pairs of regulars from the Little London pub will literally be joined together as they complete the course from the hostelry on Wisbech Road to the Cock Inn in High Street and back again on Saturday September 7.
Thirteen-month-old Ellie-May Ells, who has Downs Syndrome, was born with serious heart complications, including a hole in the heart.
Her mum Tracy Ells was warned that she may not survive or that doctors would be unable to repair the damage to her daughter’s heart.
But at five months old Ellie-May, who is the youngest of Tracy’s five children, underwent eight hours of surgery at the world-famous London hospital and since then the tot has gone from strength to strength and has been given a clean bill of health.
Tracy said: “The doctors weren’t sure they would be able to repair Ellie-May’s heart because it was such a difficult procedure, but they did it. Waiting for her to come out of surgery was the longest eight hours of my life.”
The grateful mum knew 12 weeks into her pregnancy that her baby had Downs Syndrome following routine scans and testing and she was also told of the heart complications but she decided to continue with the pregnancy.
“I knew I wanted her despite everything and now I wouldn’t be without her, she is an absolute joy,” said Tracy.
Ellie-May still has a bit of catching up to do, she is not yet sitting up by herself or crawling, but Tracy is confident she will get there.
“We are so grateful for everything Great Ormond Street Hospital have done for Ellie-May, they have quite simply saved her life and we want to say thank-you for their expertise. The pub have agreed to help with the fundraising and we’re hoping as many people as possible will get involved,” added Tracy.
Amadin Ryan, the events co-ordinator at the Little London, said the aim of the day is for people to have fun while helping a good cause.
“We are really happy to be doing something for Great Ormond Street, it is such a fantastic hospital and deserves people’s support,” said Amadin.
