Tragic BBC man was born in March
A father tragically killed in an horrific accident in Derbyshire was born in March it was revealed this week.
Forty-two-year-old David Cox, who died after his Toyota Aygo plunged into the icy River Wye as he drove his 11-year-old daughter Tess to school, on Thursday (January 24) is the son of March man Roy Cox and his ex-wife Elizabeth Gilby.
In an horrific twist his wife Ruth, who was driving the couple’s son Ioan (9) to a different school, and was following her husband along the single-track road from their remote cottage home also skidded off the road and plunged into the water within feet of David’s submerged car jamming his door shut.
Fortunately she and the two children managed to escape the overturned vehicles with Ioan running three-quarters of a mile back to his home to raise the alarm because there was no mobile phone signal in the area.
The family’s neighbour Victoria Bamber joined the family as they battled to free David, who was trapped in his vehicle for over 40 minutes under water, which is about three feet deep at the scene of the smash near Buxton. He died later in Stepping Hill Hospital at Stockport.
Ruth and the two children were treated for shock and minor injuries.
David, who was born in March lived in the town during his early years but moved to Peterborough while still at primary school.
He worked for the BBC’s IT department in Salford Greater Manchester and played a key role in coverage of the Olympics.
Acting BBC director general Tim Davie praised David’s role in the corporation’s coverage of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
He said: “We are very sad to learn of David’s tragic death. He was a popular member of the Future Media team in Salford and had been key to the success of the red button service during the Olympics in the summer.
“Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues here at the BBC at this difficult time.”
Roux Joubert, BBC head of TV and mobile platforms, said: “David was an important member of the team and played a central role in the department.
“He will be sorely missed by everyone here and our thoughts are with his family at this time.”
David’s father Roy and stepmother Rosemary (Sal) were both too upset to talk. He also leaves a stepfather Barry Gilby, brother John, sister Margaret and stepbrother Graham as well as sisters-in-law Andrea and Helen and brother-in-law Mark.
An investigation into how the accident happened has been launched by Derbyshire police.
