Wet weather did not put a damper on the annual Outwell raft race as scores of people turned out to throw flour at the contestants. Nine rafts barged and charged their way down the river on Saturday.

The race, which was followed by a gala on Sunday ,was organised by Outwell Village Hall Committee to raise money towards its plans for an extension and multiple use games area. Committee member Paul Smith said: “It has been a really good weekend for the people of Outwell and the surrounding area. All of the committee were really pleased with how the day went. We were especially pleased as the weather did not put anyone off.” Teams set off on their rafts from the Crown Lodge Hotel on Saturday and furiously paddled the half-mile course to the Crown Pub. Most teams made it to the finish line but unfortunately the Main Battle raft had to be towed by the safety boat. Youngsters on the Chariots of Fire raft won the junior competiton while Big Babies were the adult winners. Mr Smith said: “It was very well attended and people enjoyed throwing flour bombs from the bridges. The costumes worn by the Chariots of Fire team were superb. They were all dressed in red and white.” A gala was held at the village playing field the following day when people of all ages enjoyed touring the car boot sale and attractions such as bouncy castle. Organisers also put on an It’s A Knockout contest, which included space hopper derbies. The Short Notice team were the adult winners while Starbust took the junior crown.
