Wisbech business wants to expand

At a time when the economy is still doom and gloom, one Wisbech business is looking to expand and create a minimum of six new jobs.

Drake Towage, at Crab Marsh, wants to expand into an adjacent agricultural field to create a storage area for pontoons and cranes associated with its business operations.

This is particularly important as a Fenland District Council storage facility currently used for storing most of its pontoons is to close shortly.

Drake Towage, which employs 18 full-time staff, operates all over the UK and locally provides services to wind farm operators Centrica, Sutton Bridge Marina and Wisbech Port.

The company has also had interest from Welland Barges to rent workshop space to build and launch new barges from the Crab Marsh slipway.

If the planning application is approved, it would allow Drake Towage to be self-sufficient and no longer rely on the FDC facility. The proposal will also allow it to increase its pontoon fleet further and therefore employ more people.

It is also proposed to build a wildlife pond in the field, which in addition to creating a wildlife habitat, will be used to demonstrate to potential customers how their bank edges can be protected by Drake Towage.

Access to the site will be mainly from the existing main entrance off Crab Marsh, but it is proposed to create an addition entrance off Osborne Road which will be used solely for larger works traffic.
