Wisbech playground team wins top award

The team who run the adventure playground at Waterlees in Wisbech have won a top national award.

The team – led by lead playworker Reuben Francis – won the Playwork Team of the Year award at this year’s National Playwork Conference in Eastbourne on Tuesday night (March 5).

A total of 300 people from play organisations across the country attended the awards, and 60 organisations were nominated across 5 award categories.

The playground in The Spinney has been open for three years and attracts record numbers of children, young people and their families. Over 12,000 visited last year alone.

Paid for by Play Pathfinder funding in 2008, the playground is staffed and maintained by Cambridgeshire County Council.

With an ever-increasing culturally diverse population, the playground has an important role as an environment where young people of different cultures and nationalities can come together and play.

Lead playworker Reuben Francis said: “We are over the moon and the whole team feel very honoured to have received the award. It is an excellent reflection of the hard work and dedication of the team over the last few years. We would also like to thank the children and young people of Wisbech who keep us on our toes at the playground. Hopefully this accolade will help us to reach more children and young people, schools and groups locally and help raise the profile of play and share the many benefits play can bring to childhood.”

The playground is always looking for corporate sponsorship and charitable support to increase the services they can offer to the local community. Please contact 01223-507127 if you can help.

The playground and the team itself are available for private and school or group hire. For further information log onto the following webpages: www.wisbechadventureplay.net or http://www.cccschoolservices.org.uk/services/service/89/0
