WISBECH: “Robbery” landlord sticks by his story

Pub landlord John Wood has denied he made up being attacked by four men in Wisbech and said he withdrew his police statement to protect his family.

Mr Wood, who runs the Marshland Arms in Marshland St James, claimed to have been attacked by four men after going to Franks fish and chip shop in Lynn Road. He allegedly fought them off, getting stabbed with an implement believed to be a sharpened screwdriver in the process.

Police said on Tuesday that Mr Wood had admitted lying about the incident and was fined £80 for wasting police time.

However, Mr Wood is sticking by his version of events and claims the only reason he withdrew the statement was because the police were “accusing” his friends and family of being involved.

“I have absolutely nothing to gain from fabricating the incident,” Mr Wood said.

A police spokesperson reiterated there was no evidence to suggest the incident had taken place and said that in interview, the 37-year-old man had admitted “getting carried away”.
