Volunteers from March who have spent four years refurbishing part of the town’s station have received an award to recognise their hard work.

They won the Best Adopter Group award at Abellio Greater Anglia’s 2014 Station Adopters Awards held in Norwich.

Chairman of the Friends of March Railway Station, Adrian Sutterby, collected it with Mel Sutterby on behalf of the team.

The Friends group have refurbished redundant refreshment rooms at the station to make them available for community use.

The group applied for a grant from The Railway Heritage Trust and managed the entire project themselves, uncovering some architectural hidden gems such as the old entrance to the refreshment rooms and a Victorian tiled floor.

The project was completed in July, when a launch event was held to celebrate.

Andrew Goodrum, customer service director for Abellio Greater Anglia, who is pictured above (centre) presenting the award to Adrian (left) and Mel, said: “The Friends of March Railway Station have demonstrated outstanding commitment and shown how team work is the key to their success.

“Everyone involved has played to their strengths and by working together they’ve achieved something quite extraordinary.”

Mr Sutterby said: “We’re very pleased to accept this award and feel very proud that our hard work will be for the benefit of a much wider group of people.

“We have been inspired to refurbish more of the redundant rooms at the station, watch this space!”
