THREE climbers completed a mountainous challenge - raising £2,154 to help local cancer patients at the same time.

Wisbech friends Simon Brenchley (37), Mark Rose (48) and Jamie Watson (39) successfully completed the Three Peaks challenge within 24 hours and in very challenging conditions.

They climbed Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in 23 hours and 37 minutes on October 21.

Simon, who organised the climb, said they are all experienced climbers.

The money raised has been presented to the Macmillan and Hudson Palliative Care Centre, based at Wisbech’s North Cambs Hospital, in memory of Simon’s granddad, Brian Oxbury, who attended the centre.

Mr Oxbury (77) lived at Newton and he died last year of cancer. He died in the North Cambs Hospital on Trafford Ward.

The climbers are looking at Mount Kilimanjaro for their next challenge in two years time to celebrate Mark’s 50th birthday.
