New 240-litre black bins, will start appearing around the borough from this week in readiness for the new waste collection arrangements which will start on 2 April 2013.

The black bins will be delivered along with the new grey outside food bin, grey kitchen caddy and information about the new service. Residents will also receive an initial supply of compostable kitchen caddy liners.

Cllr Brian Long, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “Introducing a food waste collection and switching from weekly to alternate weekly collections for general waste is one of the biggest service changes we have implemented, and it’s crucial that people know what’s happening and what they need to do.

“Everyone should have received a leaflet, letting them know that the service is changing. The delivery of these bins will be the first physical change they notice.”

“The roll-out will take a few weeks to complete, with the first of the bins going out from 28 January.”

Delivery dates for the new bins will be published on the council’s website and in the local media. To find out when your bin will be delivered simply visit www.west-norfolk.gov.uk/yourbins.

The new bins will be delivered on the same days as residents’ black bins are emptied. The 140-litre bins which are being exchanged will then be prepared for collection, including having their wheels removed.

Hayley Kurt, Marketing and Development Manager, said: “All people need to do is put their black bin out on their usual collection day, and when it has been emptied leave it out, so that the delivery crews can pick it up and exchange it for a larger bin, outdoor food waste bin and kitchen caddy. Anyone who thinks they may be away on holiday, can check online to find their expected delivery date and then perhaps ask a neighbour to put their bin out for them.”

Luggage labels have been sent to those residents who have requested to keep their smaller 140-litre bin. These should remain attached to their bins for the next few weeks, so that their bins are not exchanged.

Hayley Kurt added: “The new bins will be delivered with information on how and when to use them. To start with, we are asking people not to use the outdoor food waste bin or kitchen caddy, as these will not be emptied until the new service starts on 2 April 2013. The black bins should be used with immediate effect. They will be emptied every week until the old service ends and the new services starts on 2 April. The black bins will then be emptied on alternate weeks with the green bins. Some homes will also have a change in collection date when the new service starts. Calendars will be delivered to all homes in the middle of March - they will not be sent out with the bins.”

Further information about the changes to the bin collection service along with frequently asked questions, and a delivery date checker are all available on the council’s website www.west-norfolk.gov.uk/yourbins.
