Costa Coffee could be coming to Wisbech if a plan submitted to Fenland District Council is approved.
New River Retail, which runs the Horsefair Shopping Centre, has agreed to lease the former O2 shop to the coffee chain and has applied for a change of use on the unit.
If approved, the coffee house would create 12 part-time jobs and fill one of the empty town centre units. It is proposed to extend the unit up to the existing ground floor columns and use the first floor as part of the cafe. The second floor would be retained for office use.
There were mixed reactions from Wisbech people on Facebook, with some people supporting the idea and others saying it won’t last. Horsefair centre manager, Kevin Smith, speaking on behalf of centre owners NewRiver Retail, said: “It will be a brilliant boost for the town if NewRiver Retail is granted permission to go ahead with the proposals to convert units 40/41 for the Costa Coffee outlet.
“Costa is one of the UK’s top coffee shops and I’m sure it will be very successful in Wisbech. The proposed outlet will be a unique offering for the Horsefair and will really appeal to our existing customers and attract new ones, giving shoppers an additional area to meet, socialise and relax, it will also help to play a part in increasing footfall within the town centre and create around 12 new jobs.”
