Moves are afoot to try to set up a new organisation aimed at preserving and improving the architectural beauty of Chatteris.
Councillor Simon King, Fenland District Council’s portfolio holder responsible for conservation, is exploring the possibility of creating such a body after being approached by local residents and he is keen that anyone who is interested in getting involved should contact him.
The idea that has been floated is to form a Chatteris Society along similar lines to those that are already in place in Wisbech, March and Whittlesey. Their aims are not only to protect their towns’ existing heritage but also to encourage high-quality modern buildings there.
Cllr King said: “There is clearly some interest in pursuing this suggestion and it has the potential to be of great benefit to the town.
“As a council we recognise the important part that our architectural heritage plays in making Fenland an attractive place to live and visit and we are keen to work closely with our civic societies to support that.
“So I would welcome any feedback from people in Chatteris about this idea and whether they would like to take it forward.”
