JONATHAN Farmer has returned to take the mantle as Wisbech’s civic leader.
On Friday, Cllr Farmer was made Mayor, making it his second stint after serving in 2008/9. He replaced outgoing Mayor Cllr Nick Meekins and the new deputy Mayor is now Cllr Viv Macrae.
The historic ceremony, which saw councillors in their ceremonial gowns and the council chamber packed with guests, did not run especially smoothly.
There was some confusion over agendas, with Cllr Farmer joking that things ran better last time he was made Mayor, even though he had no agenda and forgot his glasses.
He based his address on Internet research around serving for a second time and gave an unusual address, which strayed from tradition and included quotes from Karl Marx and Marion Barry, two-time Mayor of Washington DC who was jailed after being filmed smoking crack cocaine.
He finished by saying: “The best and brightest have been elected here to this council and hopefully we will all be working together, pushing the interests of Wisbech.”
Council leader David Oliver, who was reappointed to the position, thanked Cllr Meekins and said he had been an “excellent Mayor and ambassador” for Wisbech.
Cllr Meekins spoke fondly of the many engagements he had attended over the year, most accompanied by his wife Sara, and quoted Dr Seuss: “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.”
