Looking back on 2012, it was not only a good year nationally with the Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee – there was also plenty to celebrate in Chatteris.
Uppermost was the opening of the long-awaited new fitness suite and all weather pitch. The new facilities are already proving to be a hit, with membership of the gym exceeding expectation.
Volunteers once again helped to improve the quality of life for the town’s residents.
Chatteris Town In Bloom brightened the streets with their floral displays in the summer and the streets are sparkling now thanks to the Christmas Lights Committee, whose outstanding display is again the envy of other communities.
In the summer, the town celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with three full days of activities which were well supported despite the atrocious weather. This was a good example of partnership working between Councils and members of the public.
Many other sporting and social clubs also continued their good work. May I take this opportunity to thank, on behalf of the town, all volunteers for their commitment during the year.
I have undertaken a number of duties as Mayor since taking over in May and one of the events I have found most moving was the Remembrance Day service at Cromwell Community College.
I hope 2013 will be an equally good year for Chatteris and wish you all a Happy New Year.
