For the past five years I have been going to the St Augustine Day Centre in Wisbech.
I must say it’s the best thing I ever did.
So, if you are lonely, come and join our big happy family for a good hot meal, fun, games and entertainment.
You will be made most welcome by Maxine, Carole and all their lovely helpers.
Call them on 01945 585595 for more information.
A Very Grateful Lady,
Celebration bells a real pleasure
We would like to say well done and a big thank you to the bell ringers of St Peter’s and St Paul’s Church at Wisbech.
Their celebration bells were a real pleasure to listen to.
They made our day.
Rita and Michael Jeffery, Wisbech.
Shrub was ‘snowball bush’
As a keen reader of the ‘Dig In With Mary’ column in the Fenland Citizen, I thought it worth writing to correct the naming of the featured shrub Viburnum plicatun var. ‘Mariesii’. in last week’s newspaper.
This is commonly called the ‘Japanese snowball bush’, not the ‘Wedding Cake Tree’.
The ‘Wedding Cake Tree’ is in fact the common name for Cornus controversa variagata.
My own ‘Wedding Cake Tree’ takes pride of place in my own garden and I attach a picture of it in all its glory in early summer.
The only minor drawback is that it does tend to drop into biennial flowering so the ‘icing’ is only there in abundance in alternate years!
n Editor’s note: Roger, thank you for your letter – and the immensely impressive ‘Wedding Cake Tree’ photograph, which we include (right).
The error in last week’s Dig In With Mary column was not Mary’s – it was a mistake by the newsdesk and we stand chastised!
